Founders Ranch is the perfect location for film and television production. It is a rustic, picturesque property with a gentle valley and breathtaking views of the mountains all the way to Santa Fe. The 480 acre private ranch with its authentic Western Town is located in the lush rolling hills just 20 miles from Albuquerque International Airport, 15 miles from central Albuquerque and its hundreds of lodging options and services and just 55 miles from Santa Fe.

Founders Ranch = The Wild West!

Since the date of its original grant in 1921, Founders Ranch has been beautifully preserved in its natural and unspoiled state. Our goal is to perpetuate the beauty and ambiance of this gently rolling, pastoral, and forested environment as we continue to develop a choice film location. Founders Ranch will achieve this in a manner that insures the full enjoyment of the shooting sports and the historical traditions of the Old West in combination with the natural beauty of the property. We believe this fundamental concept serves both our organization and filmmakers by fostering a beneficial land use, while retaining the unique beauty of the land and creating an Old West atmosphere that enriches the spirit of its visitors.

Our Western Town
Founders Ranch recently completed two 80 foot and one 50 foot Western Town fronts containing 8 different buildings whose use is two fold. The fully enclosed buildings house merchandise vendors during public events and at the same time provide an authentic Western setting for filming and other media use. In the center of town a 70 by 80 foot steel shade structure has been erected to house event social functions and to serve as a shelter for film crews to use for everything from food services and meetings to talent and product prep and protection from the elements. A spectator entry building replica of New Mexico’s Laguna Mission has also been erected with a grand entry portal and two ticket offices with electricity.

Our Facilities
Founders Ranch has its own water well with a 10,000 gallon storage tank and 400 amp electrical services in town, at the house, the barn and equestrian arena. On the south end of the ranch is a 2000 square foot ranch house with kitchen, two bathrooms, three bedrooms and hook-ups for a half dozen motor homes. Below the ranch house is a 1500 square foot steel framed barn on a concrete slab that houses a work shop and storage of the ranch’s many props and equipment. The barn contains a complete tool and welding shop. Ranch roads are all weather gravel and there are two gated entries to the property.

Our Equipment
Founders Ranch has a fleet of authentic Western wagons including an original Chuckwagon, Freight Wagon, two buckboards, and a Doctors Buggy. For the wagons an assortment of saddles, tack and other western props accentuate each setting.

Founders Ranch also has two tractors including an new Branson tractor with a variety of attachments including bucket and fork lift, box-blade grader, disc, brush hog, auger with 12”, 10” and 8” bits as well as a spring tooth harrow. A smaller tractor with the same attachments is also available. There is a 2001 Ford Pickup with shell and two people hauling trailers as well as an assortment of hauling trailers from extra large to small.

Founders Ranch has a 2000 gallon International Water Truck with firefighting and dust control capabilities. A smaller 300 gallon portable water system with gas pump compliments its larger sibling.

Founders Ranch has an assortment of public address systems, entertainment stages, stage lighting, tables, chairs, an ice storage machine and 20 large coolers. There are dozens of props including barrels, street lamps, facades, bars, signage and other Western accoutrement.

Founders Ranch has graveled parking and camping areas for more than 300 vehicles. It is located just seven miles from the town of Edgewood with its Smith’s Supermarket, Wal-Mart, pharmacy, banks, fast food, restaurants, hardware store, fuel and repair facilities.

Founders Ranch also features a 150’ by 300’ equestrian arena with raised announcers booth and sound system. The arena is serviced with electricity and compressed air and has it own RV dry camping area that will accommodate more than 300 large vehicles. The arena can accommodate any equestrian event and is located in a horse culture area that provides local feed, tack, veterinary, and transport services.

Our Livestock
Founders Ranch maintains a small herd of American Buffalo and Long Horns. Motivated by alfalfa, this livestock is easily coaxed into position for spectacular back drops and atmosphere.

Location
Founders Ranch is off the beaten path and extremely private, yet it is close to all the amenities Albuquerque has to offer. It is the perfect setting for Westerns and other rural setting projects. The ranch is useful for any season and maintains a conditional use permit from Torrance County for the use of firearms and large gatherings of people. Founders Ranch is located just six miles off Interstate 40 at the top of the grade east of Albuquerque. It is 15 miles equal distance between central Albuquerque and the quaint Route 66 town of Moriarty. Albuquerque is a major American metropolis with hundreds of hotels, restaurants, and services. The Ranch is an easy twenty-mile trip from the Albuquerque International Airport and is conveniently located within seven miles of Edgewood, a community with every convenience and service including fuel, restaurants, pharmacies, and a major grocery chain.

Founders Ranch can accommodate events of almost any size and variety. We offer complete tenting and catering services using outside contractors and can either provide or refer services one can expect from a major metropolis like Albuquerque.

Since opening its gates in 2004, Founders Ranch has hosted shooting events, reenactments, concerts, and functions. Founders Ranch is home to END of TRAIL, the Single Action Shooting Society’s World Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting™ & Wild West Festival attracting tens of thousands of participants and spectators from around the world. It hosts the New Mexico State Championship in April and The SASS Four Corners Regional Championship of Cowboy Action Shooting™ in August. Performers such as Michael Martin Murphy, Don Edwards, Waddie Mitchell, and Riders in the Sky have performed at Founders Ranch, and the SASS Television series Cowboy Action Shooter on OLN used Founders Ranch as home base for its first 13 episodes.
